INTUITEL es un intuitel_logo.jpgproyecto de investigación cofinanciado por la Comisión Europea con el objetivo de contribuir a la tecnología de sistemas de e-learning mediante un sistema de guía y realimentación de los estudiantes.
Combinando el conocimiento pedagógico, el progreso cuantificado del aprendizaje y una amplia gama de datos del entorno, INTUITEL ofrecerá un guíado encaminado a un camino de aprendizaje óptimo. De esta manera los sistemas de e-learning habilitados con INTUITEL ofrecerán a los estudiantes una ayuda personalizada, pero automática,que hasta ahora sólo podía ofrecerse con tutores humanos. 


The INTUITEL project commenced October 2012 with funding from the European Commission ICT FP7 Programme of 2.9M€ over the next three years and with further financial support from project partners. The theme of the project is Technology Enhanced Learning. The Consortium is motivated by a vision of transformative technology enhancement of the learning process to empower teachers and learners and to improve their quality of experience. This will open up greater scope for ICT-enabled critical reflection on a student’s rate of progress in learning plus formative evaluation to support their learning-to-learn, and accelerated and effective learning.

The objective of INTUITEL is to enhance e-learning content and Learning Management Systems (LMS) with features that so far have been provided only by human tutors. An INTUITEL-enabled system will provide an integrated learning environment that can reconfigure and adapt itself to the needs of any learner. This will monitor their learning behaviour, and their progress, so as to support their learning with formative feedback based on the learner’s profile, and, the relevant pedagogical models. Additionally this learning feedback will be informed by insights arising from monitoring the student’s learning style and attitude, the cultural and emotional context in which learning takes place and the relevant environmental influences such as ambient noise, available communication bandwidth and interface features such as the screen size.

INTUITEL will push forward the frontiers of e-learning to support a global learning cloud with personalised technology-enhanced learning made available for any person in any place, through any access device and under any external conditions, including mobile learning scenarios. Learner-directed navigation tools will support the selection of appropriate content matched to the learner’s learning goals and their targeted competency level. This is achieved by using the learner’s elicited responses to locate their position in the relevant cognitive model. This cognitive model will be based on the INTUITEL Learning Progress Model and together with positive and goal-oriented feedback messages will effectively make available a skilled teacher’s insights to support each learner in arriving at an intuitive model of their own current learning effort; thus enhancing their meta-cognitive skills and their learning experience.

The INTUITEL Project has brought together Partners from the ICT industry and the commercial e-learning sector, and, the universities as expert e-learning practitioners to ensure the testing and evaluation of the pedagogical and technical aspects of INTUITEL under realistic conditions. This will include the integration and evaluation of INTUITEL within major LMS including Open-Source Platforms such as Moodle and ILIAS, and, others such as Clix, Crayons and eXact. Particular emphasis will be put on a widespread dissemination of INTUITEL results across the e-learning industry and involving schools, universities and other key players in the education sector. This will be achieved by the close collaboration of INTUITEL with LEARNTEC as one of the leading dissemination channels to the education community-of-practice in Europe.

Structure of INTUITEL

INTUITEL is structured as follows:


1. Pedagogical and domain-specific ontologies

A key element in INTUITEL is an OWL-based pedagogical ontology, which will provide a unified way to describe learning material and learning pathways. Diverse domain-specific ontologies can then be translated into an INTUITEL conform format and provide the system with a detailed cognitive model.

2. Learning Management System integration

INTUITEL will blend in with several free and commercial Learning Management Systems. Starting with CLIX, Crayons, eXact learning LCMS, ILIAS and Moodle, the number of supported platforms will be extendable via an XSD-based interface description. This integration will allow INTUITEL to measure the learning progress (“User Score Extraction”, USE), have direct interaction with the learner (“Tutorial Guidance”, TUG) and recommend the optimal learning objects (“Learning Object Recommender”, LORE).

3. Semantic Learning Object Model

To enhance the exchangeability of learning material, a new data format, the Semantic Learning Object Model (SLOM), will be specified. More than just storing content, SLOM will also contain domain-specific as well as pedagogical knowledge and thus bridge the gap between learning management systems and domain ontologies.

4. INTUITEL Back End

In order to guide each individual user through the learning material in an optimal way, the Learning Progress Model (LPM) will deduce the learner’s current position in the cognitive model. By using diverse historic and current metadata about the learner, as well as ambient information, the INTUITEL Engine will then create recommendations on how to best proceed, helping the learner to master the learning material as efficient and sustainable as possible.

INTUITEL Consortium
